Edna Earl Dines Out: The Waverly

Wassup wid dis blog is that it's a review of various restaurants where Edna Earl happens to dine. EE doesn't by any stretch consider herself a food snob -- but she is appalled by what and how she's sometimes served in restaurants -- and by how simply the place could be made better if only the owner cared. One of Edna Earl's dreams is that some of the restaurant owners will read this blog and take her advice. (Keep dreamin', huh?) So Edna Earl thinks she'll dream under the stars -- She'll use the ol' 5-star rating system:

Okay, after writing a few entries, Edna Earl feels impelled to give a little more explanation as to what, exactly, she's looking for in a restaurant. Well, for one thing, she's looking for a restaurant that is what it says it is. Edna Earl likes a restaurant that is what it purports to be. That is, if a restaurant charges her a pretty penny, the food better be damn good, and it'd better be well served, and the place had better be nice looking. That said, Edna Earl tends to stay away from "pretty penny" sorts of places because she has been so often disappointed in them. She has found that she's much more likely to have pleasant dining experiences in regular ol' places. But there's a risk here, too. So, what Edna Earl is looking for here, again, is a place where the food tastes good, where the service is good, and where the atmosphere is pleasant. Edna Earl doesn't want a negative vibe, ya know? She wants a pleasant dining experience, she wants good food, she wants her money's worth. And all that can be offered up in ALL SORTS of forms -- from catfish joints in the backwoods of Mississippi to Middle Eastern hole-in-the-walls in the West Village of Manhattan. The Waverly Restaurant, West Village, Manhattan *****

Okay, I admit it. I'm a diner junkie. And the Waverly is my all-time favorite. I've been coming to the Waverly for years, every chance I get. I love the Latino wait staff at The Waverly, for one thing. You just won't find any better. As far as food goes, the omelettes are the stand-out at The Waverly. They're served in a little skillet. The menu is HUGE. I don't see how in the world one little place can offer so much variety on a menu. The food isn't what I'd call gourmet, by any stretch, but it's fine for what it is -- diner food -- and the price is right and the service is wonderful and the place is spotless -- so I love it. Long live The Waverly!
